The term infrared covers a wide range of wavelengths, from 700nm up to 1mm. The International commission on Illumination (CIE) breaks it down in to the following three bands:

| IR-B: 1400nm – 3000nm | (Short wavelength infrared, SWIR) |
| IR-C: 3000nm-1mm | (MWIR, 3-8µm. LWIR, 8-15µm. FIR, 15-1000µm) |
